As far as RPGs go, Ultima Underworld 1 and 2 are serious contenders for the top spot. They’re not just excellent games, they’re also quite a cult and with many fan sites dedicated to them. But what really makes them stand out is how different they are.

In a gaming environment as niche as the Commodore 64, the most common way to explore the world of Ultima was via text adventure games. Of all the 3D first person adventures available on the system, only two have been remade: Ultima 1 and 2. These two games formed a trilogy of adventures, which developer Origin Systems then extended by creating a number of spin-offs.

The Ultima games are a series of dark fantasy role playing games originally created by brothers Richard and Lynn Miller. The series is credited as having being the first massively multiplayer dungeon crawler, that brought the action-adventure genre into the world of video games.

Unfortunately, GOG has sent out a notice that Ultima Underworld 1+2, Syndicate Plus and Syndicate Wars will soon be removed from the digital store.

These games will be played until Monday the 28th. June, 13:00 UTC, for purchase. Although the reason for this change is unclear, it was noted that this was done at the request of publishers and EA.

GOG deletes classic EA games

The only good news is that if you’ve already bought these games, they’ll stay in your library. For those who bought the games before the deletion, they will remain in their GOG library. A representative said on the official GOG forums.

We’ve reached out to EA for comment on why these games have been removed and hope to come up with an update soon.

EA Play Live is scheduled for the 22nd. So it’s possible that the company is planning to do something with these IPs at this point, but we think it’s unlikely.
