Dune: Spice Wars is a game that lets you conquer the desert planet of Arrakis through might. The game is available on both mobile and PC platforms.
The golden expanse of Arrakis’ desert is obscured by dense clouds at the start of each game of Dune: Spice Wars. Your main base and solitary ornithopter are stranded in a sea of the unknown, emphasizing how far out of your element you are.
These are modest beginnings, but it only takes two clicks to get the ornithopter’s wings in action, push back the clouds, and discover the planet’s treasures and perils.
To build up production and pay the ever-increasing Imperial Tax or Space Guild bribe, you’ll need to capture at least one spice-producing area early on.
Soon after, you’ll be looking for zones with communities that control deposits that let you produce more resources.
They must create structures to boost your economy and enable you to protect and grow your army and territory.
Windtraps provide the water needed to keep troops in the battle and seize towns, allowing your side to extend its territory. Missile batteries, hired local militia, and your regular army all serve as effective deterrents to anybody looking to steal your valuables.
Landsraad resolutions that are either broad or target particular factions are voted on by each group on a regular basis. These may be both a gift and a curse, since the boons and debuffs they provide might render a planned strike ineffective.
Espionage earns you extra resources and gives you access to missions that allow you to undermine enemy operations, reinforce your own, or murder enemy leaders later in the game. There’s also a research tree that does exactly what you’d expect it to do.
I played as both House Atreides and the Fremen in the early access edition of Dune: Spice Wars. As the former, I had to be on the alert for Wormsign at all times, personally removing troops and spice harvesters from targeted locations, and was able to take over neutral settlements without causing bloodshed.
As the latter, I didn’t have to worry as much about my soldiers dying in neutral or enemy territory or succumbing to sandworms, and I could also ride the animals to cover great distances swiftly.
Dune: Spice Wars looks and sounds fantastic, with the exception of some visual clutter while assaulting settlements. The slower pace takes some getting accustomed to, but there are some discernible taste distinctions across its factions.
With five troops per faction and micromanagement concentrating on keeping opposing ranged units occupied while bringing back those on the verge of death, combat is very straightforward.
In its RTS core, there is a solid foundation and a nice amount of 4X flavor, but there are moments when things seem a touch too plodding or repetitive.
These visible lulls in the race to the top are usual in early access games, and developer Shiro Games should be able to resolve them in the months ahead. On April 26, Dune: Spice Wars will be available in early access.
